The Company Gardens Cape Town

The Company Gardens situated in the centre of Cape Town were started by Jan van Riebeeck on his arrival at the Cape in 1652.

When the Dutch arrived this valuable piece of land lay in a valley surrounded on three sides by Devils Peak in the east, Table Mountain to the south and Lions head to the west.

Just four hundred metres to the north were the ancient shores of Table Bay where van Riebeeck and his party landed.

Before the arrival of the Dutch the land was occupied by the hunter gatherer tribes who roamed the area and were attracted to the foot of Table Mountain by the many streams that ran off the mountain and provided grazing and water for their livestock.

On his arrival van Riebeeck and his gardener Hendrik Boom immediately set about laying out the gardens they had been instructed to set up.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa and a prime holiday destination in the winelands of the Western Cape.

Van der Stel the Commander of the Cape was given the task of expanding the colony and providing supplies for ships rounding the Cape on their way to the east.

Providing provisions was one thing but van der Stel thought that it would be nice to give the ships some variety and that wine would be a good choice.

In 1679 Simon van der Stel and his entourage visited the Stellenbosch area and seeing that the climate and soil were suited for agriculture decided to establish a town in the area.

The streets of Stellenbosch were laid out along the banks of the Eerste River and the settlers who were granted land were encouraged to plant oak trees along them to provide shade.

The streets are still lined with them today.

Cape of Storms

Back in the 1400's when the Portuguese were still searching for the sea route to India they rounded the Cape and many of the ships got caught in our winter storms and were wrecked.

The Cape then got the name of the Cape of Storms .

When the westerly wind comes screaming in from the Atlantic Ocean and brings with it the really bad weather that the Cape is renowned for shipping looks for somewhere to hide.

Anchoring in Table Bay is normally reasonably safe but when a gale blows make sure that your anchor holds and you don't end up on the beach like the two ships I am going to tell you about in this article.

Back in 1773 on Sunday the 30th of May a storm blew up in Table Bay.

The wind so strong that the ships in the bay had major problems with their anchors.

The ship De Jonge Thomas was anchored in the bay with 207 people on board when the storm arrived.

The wind was so strong that it broke the ship's anchor ropes and blew the ship aground on a sandbank off Woodstock beach.
